Zendaya No Longer Playing Aaliyah In TV Biopic

Zendaya will no longer play Aaliyah in the Lifetime biopic about the late R&B singer. The 17-year-old Disney star backed out of the project and a rep confirmed that she is “no longer involved” with the film.

Zendaya was cast only two weeks ago and filming was scheduled to start this summer, with a fall release date. She was originally set to record four of Aaliyah’s songs for the film. The biopic is tentatively titled “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B,” and isset to trace Aaliyah’s career from her debut on “Star Search” to her tragic death in 2001. She was killed in a plane crash at age 22.

The network’s PR department released a statement on Twitter and said that production is “on hold.”

The late singer’s family has been vocal about their opposition to the biopic and said that they would make it hard for Lifetime to use recordings. “Because we control the masters, the rights and some images of the musical elements that we put together like the videos, and photo shoots and things that we did, what we can just withhold those elements from the production which we would do,” Aaliyah’s cousin Jomo Hankerson told The Wrap. But he was clear that they didn’t have a problem with Zendaya’s casting, just the idea of a made-for-TV movie. “This needs A-list actors, A-list talent that can breathe life into what we think is a phenomenal story,” Hankerson told the New York Daily News.

Ice-T’s grandson, Elyjah Marrow, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter for the accidental shooting death of his roommate on Tuesday in Cobb County, Georgia.

Ice-T Explains Why He Remade ’99 Problems’ and Brought Back Body Count

Police told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the 19-year-old was “recklessly handling” a handgun on Tuesday afternoon when it went off, fatally shooting Daryus Johnson, also 19. Police found Johnson unconscious in their apartment; he was transported to WellStar Kennstone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“Marrow was not using proper firearms safety when handling the gun,” Officer David Baldwin of the Marietta police told the Marietta Daily Journal. “That reckless handling of the firearm is what led to Johnson being accidentally shot and eventually killed.”

Marrow is being held in the Cobb County jail as police continue their investigation. In addition to involuntary manslaughter, Marrow also faces charges of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless conduct, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of a stolen firearm.

Marrow is the son of Ice-T’ daughter LeTesha, and he regularly appeared in his grandfather’s reality TV show Ice Loves Coco.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Rapper Rick Ross has been released after his arrest following a North Carolina concert.

Greensboro Police Department spokeswoman Susan Danielsen says that Ross was taken into custody Friday night after the SuperJam concert. She says a court had issued an order for his arrest because he failed to appear in court on a previous misdemeanor marijuana charge.

The rapper, whose real name is William L. Roberts, was taken into custody after his performance. Danielsen says he was released on $1,000 bond.

Messages seeking comment weren’t immediately returned by a spokesman for Universal Music Group or executives at a booking agency that works with Ross.

Legendary R&B Singer Bobby Womack Passes at Age 70

Bobby Womack, a colorful and highly influential R&B singer-songwriter who influenced artists from the Rolling Stones to Damon Albarn, has died. He was 70.

Womack’s publicist Sonya Kolowrat said Friday that the singer had died, but she could provide no other details.

Womack was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease two years ago and overcame addiction and multiple health issues, including prostate cancer, to pull off a second act in his career.

Womack performed recently at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and seemed in good health and spirits. He had been scheduled to perform at multiple events across Europe in July and August.

He told the BBC in 2013 the Alzheimer’s diagnosis came after he began having difficulty remembering his songs and the names of people he had worked with.

And there have been many. The soul singer cut a wide path through the music business as a performer and songwriter in a career that spanned seven decades. Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, long after he’d lost his fortune and his career to addiction.

He spoke of kicking his substance abuse problems in a 2012 interview with The Associated Press and all the friends he’d lost to drugs over the years.

“I think the biggest move for me was to get away from the drug scene,” Womack said. “It wasn’t easy. It was hard because everybody I knew did drugs. … They didn’t know when to turn it off. So for me looking at Wilson Pickett, close friends of mine, Sly Stone, Jim Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and I can go on and on and on, and I say all of them died because of drugs.”

According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, Womack was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and sang gospel music at a young age, performing with his brothers in The Womack Brothers. Under the influence of gospel and R&B legend Sam Cooke, who signed the group to his personal label, Womack moved into secular music. In the early 1960s his group recorded “It’s All Over Now,” which was covered and by the Stones and became the band’s first number-one hit.

His songs have been recorded by multiple artists, and he played as a session musician in Memphis in the 1960s.

Albarn and XL Recordings president Richard Russell helped Womack regain his career with 2012 comeback album “The Bravest Man in the Universe.” The album was a departure for Womack, full of electronic music and beats. But it was lauded by critics for a simple reason: That distinctive voice of his still brought chills.

“I don’t think he ever really thought that he would do anything again,” Albarn said of Womack in March. “Watching his rehabilitation and watching his ability to confront new material and new challenges was nothing short of miraculous at the time, and he still today continues to battle his demons and his illness. But he’s a beautiful person and when he opens his mouth and that voice comes out, it is something that is somehow touched by God.”

R Kelly Opens Up About Transgender Son in Interview

JK2

After coming out publicly as a transgender boy last month, Jay Kelly, the soon-to-be 14-year-old son of R&B singer R. Kelly, told his followers on Ask.fm that he’s received an outpouring of support. Meanwhile, his famous dad hadn’t said anything.

Then on Monday, R. Kelly was asked directly what he thought of his son’s decision to go public by a radio DJ with Chicago’s WGCI. Asked to address the “report of [his] daughter becoming [his] son,” Kelly pushed back.

“You don’t really wanna open it up by saying my daughter is becoming my son, because if that were true — don’t even give the blogs that kind of credit. You know what I’m saying? Real talk.”

In the end, Kelly said he didn’t want to address the news and implied that the report was inaccurate in some way. “As far as that’s concerned, always believe what you see — with your own eyes that is,” he told the hosts. “Always believe what you see. That’s the best way to go about this business. I’ve heard a lot of things about a lot of people, and it was never true.”

More broadly, Kelly expressed his love for all of his kids: “You save money so your kids can go to college. No matter what they are or who they are, they are still your kids, you love them. You got to support them. … At the end of the day it’s not about me no more. It’s about three lovely, lovely kids that I am in love with and that’s in love with me.”

In responding to questions from listeners on his Ask.fm account, Jay Kelly has been especially candidabout his status as a transgender boy, answering a question about why he’s famous by saying, “Because I’m transgender and the son of R. Kelly. I don’t know why that is such a huge deal.” He said he has his mother’s support and implied that his father isn’t a big prescence in his day-to-day life, writing, “It’s not that I don’t like him. He made bad choices, and I don’t want a relationship with him.”
