Poet Maya Angelou Passes at 86

Maya Angelou — one of America’s most famous poets — died last night in a Winston-Salem, North Carolina hospital while recovering from a mystery sickness.


Angelou was recovering from an “unexpected ailment” that sent her to the hospital.

She has received more than 30 honorary degrees from universities around the world.

Her most famous book — “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” — was also her most controversial.

Maya was supposed to be honored Friday in Houston where she was supposed to receive the Beacon of Life Award.

Angelou was one of the most inspiring poets of our time — most famously saying “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Wiz Khalifa Arrested In Texas For Pot Possession

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Authorities say rapper Wiz Khalifa has been arrested in West Texas for marijuana possession.

The performer from Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, was stopped at an inspection checkpoint at the El Paso airport. A statement from El Paso police says because Khalifa traveled without identification, a search was ordered and Transportation Security Administration agents found a canister with marijuana. TSA alerted police, who then arrested Khalifa.

He was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and was released after posting $300 bail.

Court records do not list an attorney. A message left at Khalifa’s agency was not immediately returned.

Khalifa posted a photo on Twitter inside of what appeared to be a holding cell.

Khalifa was born Cameron Thomaz in Minot, North Dakota. He was a headliner at an El Paso music festival Saturday.

Damn. Talk about a uneven fight. The Rubber Band Man took a swing at the five-division world champion this morning, after which Flod was overheard saying to T.I. to ‘control your bitch’.

T.I. took a swing at Floyd Mayweather Jr. and it caused a chair-tossing brawl in the Fatburger on the Vegas Strip early Sunday morning … TMZ has learned … and we’ve obtained multiple videos.

According to several witnesses … Floyd was eating inside the restaurant when T.I. walked up and started jawing at Floyd.

It’s unclear what caused the beef, but we’re told T.I. swung at Floyd … their giant bodyguards jumped in to separate them … and then the all out melee began.

At one point you hear Floyd telling at T.I., “control your bitch.”

Music festival promoters Together Five broke the news on their website with a notice that Yasiin Bey’s tour had been canceled because of legal and immigration issues.

We regret to inform you that due to immigration / legal issues Yasiin Bey is unable to enter back into the United States and his upcoming U.S. tour has been canceled, including May 15th, Together Boston’s show at The Wilbur Theatre. Individual ticket refunds for this show are available at point of sale.


Yasin Bey has lived in South Africa for the past year.

Tupac’s Final Words Revealed by Police Officer on Murder Scene

(RollingStone.com) — The first police officer at the scene of Tupac Shakur’s 1996 drive-by murder has revealed the last words spoken by the late rap legend. And they’re not exactly peaceful.

“He looked at me, and he took a breath to get the words out, and he opened his mouth,” says Chris Carroll, a retired sergeant with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, in a new feature with Vegas Seven. “And then the words came out: ‘F**k you.'”

Shakur was shot multiple times on September 7th, 1996. After leaving a boxing match with former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight, the rapper and his bodyguards got into a scuffle with 21-year-old Crips gang member Orlando Anderson in the lobby of the MGM Grand casino. Carroll, who worked with the city’s bike patrol unit, had also been watching the same Mike Tyson fight, but was unaware of the brawl taking place in the lobby.

Later, a white Cadillac pulled up beside Knight and Shakur while they were stopped at a traffic light and one man began shooting out of the back window. Carroll was the first officer to respond to the grisly scene.

“I grab the car door and I’m trying to open it, but I can’t get it open,” he says. “[Knight] keeps coming up on my back, so I’m pointing my gun at him. I’m pointing it at the car. I’m yelling, ‘You guys lay down! And you, get the f**k away from me!’ And every time I’d point the gun at him, he’d back off and even lift his hands up, like ‘All right! All right!’ So I’d go back to the car, and here he comes again. I’m like, ‘F**ker, back off!’ This guy is huge, and the whole time he’s running around at the scene, he’s gushing blood from his head. Gushing blood! I mean the guy had clearly been hit in the head, but he had all his faculties. I couldn’t believe he was running around and doing what he was doing, yelling back and forth.”

Carroll says when he finally was able to open the door, Shakur’s limp body fell out of the vehicle, “like he was leaning against the door.”

“So I grabbed him with my left arm, and he falls into me, and I’ve still got my gun in the other hand,” he continues. “He’s covered with blood, and I immediately notice that the guy’s got a ton of gold on — a necklace and other jewelry — and all of the gold is covered in blood. That has always left an image in my mind. . . After I pulled him out, Suge starts yelling at him, ‘Pac! Pac!’ And he just keeps yelling it. And the guy I’m holding is trying to yell back at him. He’s sitting up and he’s struggling to get the words out, but he can’t really do it. And as Suge is yelling ‘Pac!,’ I look down and I realize that this is Tupac Shakur.”

Carroll says he attempted to get a “dying declaration” of a potential suspect from Shakur, but the rapper was ignoring him at first.

“And then I saw in his face, in his movements, all of a sudden in the snap of a finger, he changed,” he says. “And he went from struggling to speak, being noncooperative, to an ‘I’m at peace’ type of thing. Just like that. . . He went from fighting to ‘I can’t do it.’ And when he made that transition, he looked at me, and he’s looking right in my eyes. And that’s when I looked at him and said one more time, ‘Who shot you?’. . . He looked at me and he took a breath to get the words out, and he opened his mouth, and I thought I was actually going to get some cooperation. And then the words came out: ‘F**k you.’ After that, he started gurgling and slipping out of consciousness.”

So why is Carroll coming forward with with information in 2014? Two reasons: Retiring from the Metro has allowed him the freedom to speak about the homicide case without being reprimanded (“It’s been almost 18 years,” he says. There’s clearly never going to be a court case on this.”), and he also didn’t want “Tupac to be a martyr or a hero because he told the cops ‘F**k you.'”

Carroll says Shakur never spoke another word — remaining silent even when another officer tried to draw out a declaration in the ambulance.

“As soon as he got to the hospital, he went into surgery and was heavily sedated, and I guess he went into a coma and really never came out of that, until they took him off of life support,” he continues. “So that moment I talked to him was his last real living moment where he was speaking. I talked to the cop who rode in the ambulance with him. He said Tupac never came out of it, and he never said anything at the hospital. There was nothing else.”

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling couldn’t even apologize without making more inflammatory comments. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper that aired Monday night, Sterling admitted that he “made a terrible mistake” by uttering the racist remarks that earned him exile from the NBA, but he also took a shot at Magic Johnson.

“Big, Magic Johnson, what has he done?” Sterling asked Cooper. “He’s got AIDS.”

Cooper clarified that Johnson was diagnosed with HIV, not AIDS. Sterling went on, “What kind of a guy has sex with every girl, then he catches HIV? Is that someone we want to respect and tell our kids about? I think he should be ashamed of himself. I think he should go into the background. What does he do for the black people?”

Sterling received a lifetime ban from the NBA and a $2.5 million fine from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver after audio recordings of his racist comments were released by TMZ and Deadspin. In the recordings, Sterling told a woman, V. Stiviano, to not bring black people to games or share photos of herself with black people on social media. A photo of Stiviano with Magic Johnson was mentioned during the recorded conversation.

Sterling told Copper that he has spoken to Johnson twice since the recordings were released. Asked if he had offered an apology to the NBA legend, Sterling questioned Johnson’s status as a role model.

“Well, if I said anything wrong, I’m sorry,” Sterling responded. “He’s a good person. What am I going to say? Has he done everything he can do to help minorities? I don’t think so. But I’ll say it, he’s great. But I just don’t think he’s a good example for the children of Los Angeles. That he would go and do what he did, and then get AIDS.”

Sterling went on to claim that “some of the African-Americans — maybe I’ll get in trouble again — they don’t want to help anybody.”

In the interview with Cooper, which came nearly two weeks after the first recording was released, Sterling also claimed he “was baited” by Stiviano into making racist remarks.

“I mean, that’s not the way I talk. I don’t talk about people for one thing, ever. I talk about ideas and other things. I don’t talk about people,” he said.

Along with the lifetime ban, Silver said he would urge the NBA’s Board of Governors to force a sale of the Clippers. Sterling expressed hope that the owners might not vote for a sale but did not express interest in a prolonged legal battle.

“But if you fight with my partners, what at the end of the road, what do I benefit, especially at my age? If they fight with me and they spend millions and I spend millions, let’s say I win or they win, I just don’t know if that’s important,” said Sterling.

Silver released a statement apologizing to Magic Johnson since “he continues to be dragged into this situation and be degraded by such a malicious and personal attack… The NBA Board of Governors is continuing with its process to remove Mr. Sterling as expeditiously as possible.”

Did Beyonce’s Sister Attack Jay-Z? (Video)

TMZ  just released surveillance video from an elevator which appears to be Solange, Beyonce’s sister, beating the shit out of Jay-Z! He may not have 99 problems, but Solange is definitely one!

Jay Z was ferociously assaulted by Beyonce‘s sister Solange  … who was wildly kicking and swinging at him inside an elevator … and the attack was captured on surveillance video … obtained by TMZ.

According to our sources, it all went down at a Met Gala after party last week at the Standard Hotel in NYC.  In the video … Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange step into the elevator … and then Solange goes crazy, screaming at Jay before unleashing a violent attack. 

A large man — who appears to be a bodyguard — attempts to hold Solange back, but she manages to connect at least 3 times.  At one point Solange throws a kick and Jay grabs her foot, but never attempts to strike her.  Beyonce stands by without getting physically involved. 

And this is interesting.  When you look closely, you see the bodyguard hit the emergency stop switch on the 12th floor — mid fight — presumably to keep the fight private.

At one point, Solange smacks Jay with her purse … spilling the contents all over the floor of the elevator.

Eventually the group exits the elevator … but not before Solange takes a few last shots.

All three walked out of the building together — Solange looks pissed — but while Bey and Solange get in one car … security walks Jay to a different one. 

It’s unclear what triggered the fight.
